How it got here The university built the shop, then handed over the keys.

UWC put up the building, the brand and the money. That last part is what usually stops a person from ever starting. Then they gave it to an entrepreneur, Paul Marais, to run as his own. BrewDubs opened in February 2023 as the first coffee shop on campus. It worked well enough that UWC is now repeating it elsewhere.

    Grind

    Beans are ground fine enough for espresso.

    Extract

    Hot water is pushed through the grounds, for about 25 to 30 seconds.

    Pour

    Milk is steamed to a gloss and poured in one steady stream.

Who actually makes the coffee?

Three trained baristas. The usual complaint about campus coffee is that nobody behind the counter was taught how. Not the case here. The shop itself is run by Paul Marais.

How much is a coffee?

An espresso is R20. An americano is R25. A large flat white is R35. Everything else is priced on the menu above.

Am I going to lose my whole break in a queue?

There is a whole Grab & Go menu for exactly that. Sandwiches and wraps, already made. Point, pay, go.

Can I sit and work there?

Yes. There is bar seating along the windows and there are tables at the back.

When are you open?

Seven in the morning until five in the afternoon, Monday to Friday.

Where is it exactly?

Main campus in Bellville, right next to the Faculty of Education building.

Is it only coffee?

Bubble tea, smoothies, iced tea, muffins, croissants, cronuts, cake, sandwiches and wraps. The full list is on the menu above.
